As of 18 September 2024, Denmark no longer recognises extended Afghan national passports. Afghan citizens holding this type of passport must contact Afghan authorities to obtain a new national passport. Below are options available for Afghan citizens in Denmark seeking to obtain a convention or alien’s passport through the Danish Immigration Service.
Eligibility for Alien’s Passport
If you are an Afghan citizen with a residence permit based on grounds other than asylum—such as family reunification or employment—you are not automatically entitled to an alien’s passport from the Immigration Service. In these cases, you may only qualify for an alien’s passport if you can demonstrate that you are unable to obtain an Afghan national passport. If obtaining this passport requires travel back to Afghanistan, you will generally be advised to pursue that option.
If your Afghan national passport has expired and you need to apply for an extension of your residence permit (e.g., due to family reunification), the same conditions apply as described above. When processing applications for an alien’s passport or an extension of a residence permit, the Immigration Service cannot consider legal conditions related to asylum if your residence permit is based on other grounds.
If you believe you cannot return to Afghanistan due to legal conditions regarding asylum, you may apply for asylum.
Eligibility for Convention or Alien’s Passport
If you are an Afghan citizen in Denmark with a residence permit on the grounds of asylum, or if you are a family member reunified with a parent who has asylum, you are entitled to obtain a convention or alien’s passport, depending on your specific type of residence permit.
